The South African, Afrikaans language film Musiek vir die Agtergrond, has made the official selection for the 2014 Mumbai International Film Festival (MAMI), taking place from 14 to 21 October in Mumbai, India.
The award winning, Musiek vir die Agtergrond will make history as it is the first Afrikaans language film to be selected for the festival. The 2004 film Yesterday, written and directed by Darrell Roodt, is the only other South African film to have been selected for the festival in previous years.
Musiek vir die Agtergrond has been receiving significant international recognition and praise after it was sold to American distributor, D Street Releasing, last year. The film also had VOD and theatrical releases in both New-Zealand and Australia last year.
According to Channel24 website, Sallas de Jager, writer and director of the film, is very enthusiastic about the selection and the possibilities it can open in the future, “It’s always a humbling experience to present your work to a new audience. We hope that this could be a small step in the right direction leading to more South African films being seen in India and Asia.”
