On 2 March, a US army sergeant claiming the main character in the Oscar-nominated Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker was based on him, filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit against the film’s producers.
The sergeant, Jeffrey S. Sarver, claims that screenwriter and producer Mark Boal used personal details from his life in an embarrassing way. He claims that nearly all the situations portrayed in the film were based on his personal experiences.
This is not the first pre-Oscar controversy to hit The Hurt Locker. Days ago one of the film’s producers, Nicholas Chartier, was banned from the Oscar ceremony because of sending e-mails which contravened the Academy of Motion Picture campaigning code.
