PromaxBDA Africa 2015 highlight: Amie Mills

Amie Mills, senior digital producer at Saatchi & Saatchi London, will present a
session at the PromaxBDA Africa conference titled: Interactive Storytelling and the
Power of the Prototype. Sponsored by M-Net and DStv, Mills will share with
attendees her experience and expertise as an interactive storyteller who has
worked on a number of transmedia products including games, websites and apps to
market television shows. PromaxBDA Africa takes place at the Maslow Hotel in
Johannesburg on 20 November 2015.

About the session

Platforms and tech products are dominating conversations of the current video
content landscape. Brands such as Netflix, Snapchat, Oculus and Periscope are
taking linear content and transforming it into immersive and interactive experiences
for viewers. This session will look at international case studies, from broadcast to
virtual reality, that use interactive storytelling and the power of the prototype, to
extend story worlds from one screen to many in an attempt to keep the content-hungry hordes happy.

PromaxBDA Africa 2015 highlight: Nick McFarlane

At the PromaxBDA Africa conference this year, which takes place on 20 November at
the Maslow Hotel in Johannesburg, Nick McFarlane will deliver a session titled:
“Hunting the Killer Idea.’ McFarlane is a graphic designer, artist, illustrator and the
author of ‘Spinfluence: The Hardcore Propaganda Manual for Controlling the Masses’;
and he is sponsored to speak at the conference by M-Net and DStv.

About the session

Killer Ideas are out there. Wild and free-spirited yet deviously hard to spot, let alone
capture. But if you’ve got a vision, plan and process (and you’re not afraid of failure),
then there’s no reason you can’t execute your own killer idea.

Nick weaves his brushes with propaganda, punk, and publishing into a hunting yarn
about the difficulties and dangers involved in the creative process

PromaxBDA Africa 2015 highlight: Maurice Marable

The 2015 keynote session at the PromaxBDA Africa conference will be delivered by
US director Maurice Marable. Sponsored by the SABC, Marable will share with
attendees his experience as a filmmaker who has worked on feature
documentaries, episodic television, commercials and on-air promotional campaigns
in a session titled: “The Truth about Creativity’. PromaxBDA Africa takes place at the Maslow Hotel in Johannesburg on 20 November.

About the session

Marable will focus on the personal process one needs to take in order to produce
winning creative work. “It is all about finding and expanding the emotional truth in
all aspects of the work,’ he says. “They say there is no truth in advertising, but in
promotion it should be the opposite.’

Marable will give the PromaxBDA audience tools and a road map to create authentic
and exciting promotional campaigns. Using some of his work as examples, Marable
will take attendees on a journey through his personal creative process. It will move from
getting the assignment, the thinking, the concept and, finally, the execution.

The truth about creativity is that you can’t truly be creative until you do the non-
creative work. This means getting to the heart of your subject matter. In this
excavation, you will uncover the nuances—those subtleties everyone is emotionally
feeling but hasn’t yet been put in words. Once you know the truth of the work, you will become more confident in your own creative voice, pushing yourself further than you thought possible.

PromaxBDA Africa 2015 highlight: Tim Horwood

Tim Horwood, creative director at MTV Networks Africa (MTVNA), is presenting a

session titled: “World Gold – 75 reasons to love your job’ at the upcoming
PromaxBDA Africa conference. PromaxBDA Africa takes place at the Maslow Hotel

in Johannesburg on 20 November 2015. With experience in front of and behind the

camera, Horwood has helmed various television shows and campaigns across
Africa.

About the session

Why should you love your job? It’s pretty simple really.
1. We get paid to express our ideas, create beautiful images and craft words into

scripts that can affect people’s lives.
2. We get away with wanky statements that would be ridiculed in the real world

(see reason 1)
3. We get paid to watch great TV (see reason 4)
4. World Gold. Really? – great TV? For sure! Admittedly, this session is by no means

a reason to love your job and I’m not planning on paying you to attend, but you get

the jist.

World Gold is absolutely stuffed with 75 brilliant promos from around the world. All

received a shiny statue for their trouble and all should inspire you to carry on loving

what you do.

PromaxBDA Africa 2015 highlight: Liz Dunning

Branding Consultant Liz Dunning is one of the creative experts who will be speaking
at the PromaxBDA Africa conference this year, which takes place on 20 November
at the Maslow Hotel in Johannesburg. Dunning’s sessions are titled: “The Ultimate
Branding Bootcamp’.

About the sessions

Creating strong new brands and making sure your existing channels stay relevant is
something all creatives grapple with. Dunning, who has held senior positions at
leading broadcast agencies, including having her own award winning agency for
twelve years, will take you through two engaging sessions on this important
subject.

The first session is a journey around the world looking at the tactics used by
channels to clearly and effectively differentiate themselves in their market place.
The second is dedicated to the Ten Golden Rules of branding channels. Dunning will
examine the best way to go about defining the brief, developing the positioning,
inspiring creative, grasping digital and real life extensions to your ideas, through to
building the case for change internally, bringing colleagues with you and selling
your ideas.

PromaxBDA Africa 2015 highlight: Jihan Zencirli

At the PromaxBDA Africa conference this year, which takes place on 20 November
at the Maslow Hotel in Johannesburg, Jihan Zencirli will deliver a session titled: “No
Really – Break a Leg. Less is Best. Hope for the Worst.’ As the founder of Geronimo
Balloon Troopers, Zencirli has earned a reputation as a leading business influencer
and creative innovator.

About the session

How many times have you thought that the solution to your success is something
achingly outside your reach? Whether it’s a tool, a connection, an investor, a
degree, a new computer, a bigger budget, a business partner, an office with a view,
a better boss, or a relaxing trip to the coast? Even the most respected, capable,
creative and industrious humans are programmed to seek their missing piece
outside themselves – often at the expense of time, and fresh innovation.
In this session you will not only explore the act of embracing limitations but also
the deliberate process of seeking and inventing restrictions and limitations as a
needful process to find solutions within oneself.

Jihan’s session persuasively suggests that without the crutch of known paths, you
can find yourself in the ideal environment for the spark of your own brilliance and
genius to appear.
