Malawi’s president, Joyce Banda, will host African filmmakers and celebrities at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) nomination event on Saturday, 16 March 2013.
From 14 to 17 March, events such as a nomination concert, the main nomination announcement night and a post-nomination party, bringing together local business and political communities, as well as celebrities from Africa, will take place in Malawi.
“AMAA is a continental brand and reward system for motion picture practitioners. We always move the nominations event from country to country. It is our way of promoting the African nature of the award and also celebrates our culture and diversity,’ says Tony Anih, director of administration of the AMAA.
“This year we decided to come to Malawi because of the level of popularity and acceptability of African films, especially Nollywood and Gollywood movies in this country,” adds Anih
During the event, the 25 categories of the awards are announced before the main award ceremony takes place in April.
Anih says the Film in a Box project of the Africa Film Academy has been endorsed by President Banda. Therefore the Academy will start a training programme from the first week in March, which is targeted at young people in Malawi who are interested in pursuing a career in filmmaking.
