South African movie exhibitor Ster-Kinekor has announced the company’s biggest selling opening weekend in recent history. According to Ster-Kinekor, this is evidence that the South African public still love to see movies as they were intended – on the big screen, with big sound and big entertainment.
Fiaz Mahomed, CEO of Ster-Kinekor Theatres, commented, “Last week we recorded one of our biggest opening weeks yet selling out at many of our cinemas nationwide as people flocked to see the much anticipated movie The Avengers. This past week saw our highest attendance levels on an opening title within the last two years. Interestingly, Ster-Kinekor Theatres released The Avengers in South Africa a full eight days before its release in The United States, breaking local box office attendance records before those in Hollywood. This is a great affirmation that cinema remains a favourite entertainment destination among South African movie goers.”
Adding to this Ster-Kinekor is currently experiencing another great week with the release of Think Like a Man which sold out over this past weekend, while bookings for the action packed movie Battleship are also selling well.
The huge screen, crystal-clear surround sound and the choice of watching movies in 3D, are still what make a trip to the cinema first prize for movie lovers. As a result, Ster-Kinekor Theatres will continue to bring innovation and growth to the cinema market throughout 2012 and beyond.
Mahomed continues, “We are committed to growing the cinema industry and thank our loyal customers for their escalating support. We also encourage our audiences to look out for exciting developments at Ster-Kinekor in the near future including the launch of new complexes, great promotions, social media innovations and more.”
Ster-Kinekor Theatres has taken their cinema experience online building on the strong platform of their extremely popular website by launching a mobi-site (http://www.sterkinekor.mobi) and the Ster-Kinekor Nokia App in September and December 2011 respectively. “Both have been extremely well received by the public and have in no small way contributed to the growth of our cinema audience,” concludes Mahomed.
