The management of beleaguered South African broadcaster SABC and Organised Labour – the Media Workers Association of South Africa (MWASA), the Broadcasting, Electronic Media and Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU) and Communications Workers Union (CWU) – have agreed on a framework of engagement regarding the SABC’s turnaround strategy.
This follows the recent incident when the unions walked out of a strategic meeting with the SABC on the basis that they had not been consulted about the turnaround strategy.
- The agreement seeks to ensure that all parties:
- will engage on an ongoing basis in terms of applicable laws and legislation;
- agree on the frequency of meetings;
- agree on the sharing of information and providing input in relation to activities pertinent to the SABC and in particular, turnaround strategy
A statement issued by the SABC reads: “The SABC and Organised Labour are happy that they managed to find middle ground and believe these engagements will be the start of a cordial relationship between all parties. All parties committed themselves to ensuring that they play their part in making the turnaround strategy a success.”
