South African cinema exhibitor Nu Metro Cinemas has partnered with DigiScreen to bring spectacular international operas and ballets filmed live in high definition to local audiences.
DigiScreen is a digital network which has an exclusive collaboration with Opus Arte and the Royal Opera House of London. It thus has access to productions staged at the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden, London), Palais Garnier (Paris), Teatro Real (Madrid), Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona), War Memorial (San Francisco) and other great stages of the world.
These HD productions are presented exclusively by DigiScreen and its partners to audiences in more than 300 cinemas across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and Japan.
Thes presentations will start towards the end of September in South Africa at the following Nu Metro Cinemas: Bedford Centre, Hyde Park, Menlyn Park, Pavilion, V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk and Montecasino.
Says Mark Harris, Content and Marketing head for Nu Metro Cinemas: “The season kicks off with the sensational Renée Fleming in the opera, La traviata by Verdi, followed by The Barber of Seville (Rossini), Falstaff (Verdi) and then The Nutcracker in December 2009, which will be the first ballet to be presented on cinema screens in South Africa.”
More outstanding productions will be screened during the coming year.
