South African Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron (Monster) is one of a number of stars interested in playing the lead role in the film adaptation of Atlas Shrugged, the best selling novel from the late novelist, screenwriter and philosophist, Ayn Rand (The Fountainhead).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, other actresses vying for the role are Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway.

Rand developed a philosophical system called objectivism, which is at the core of Atlas Shrugged. The book tells the story o a female railroad executive trying to keep her corporation competitive. It was published in 1957 but is regarded as particularly relevant today. Rand described objectivism as “a philosophy for living on earth’, grounded in reality and aimed at defining man’s nature and the nature of the world around him.
