“Blood Diamond’, which was shot in South Africa and garnered four Oscar nominations (Best Actor – Leonardo diCaprio, Best Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing), took over R2m at the South African box office in its opening week, giving it top spot.
In second place is the Ben Stiller comedy “Night at the Museum’, followed by two other multiple Oscar nominees, “The Departed’ (Best Film, Best Director – Martin Scorsese, Best Supporting Actor – Mark Wahlberg) and “The Queen’ (Best Film, Best Actress – Helen Mirren, Best Director – Stephen Frears). In fifth place and still holding strong is “Casino Royale’, now at over R22m in local box office takings.
