Mirren and Affleck win at Venice

Big winners at this year’s Venice Film Festival were Helen Mirren who scooped the Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Queen Eliabeth II in Stephen Frears’ The Queen and Ben Affleck, the Best Actor winner for Hollywoodland. In the film Affleck plays the ill-fated 1950s television Superman, George Reeves.


The Chinese film Still Life was judged Best Film of the festival, winning the Golden Lion. Eighty-four year old French Filmaker, Alain Resnais, won Best Director for Private Fears in Public Places.


Best Screenplay went to Peter Morgan for The Queen, a fictionalised dramatisation of how Queen Elizabeth II dealt with the death of Princess Diana.


Africa featured in the awards, with the Chad film Daratt winning the Special Jury Prize.
