Box office ahoy!

eonline.com reports that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest has become only the third film in movie history to reach the $1bn mark in worldwide box office takings. The Johnny Depp caper joins frontrunner Titanic and second-placed The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the Kings in this elite group.

Although “Pirates” has crossed the $4m mark in the US, 60% of its worldwide box office comes from foreign markets. For “Pirates” to bypass The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the Kings, it would have to make an additional $130m, which is not considered very likely given the strong Hollywood releases about to hit the circuit.
