LONDON — It’s been a busy few weeks for Mark Thompson.
Not only is the BBC’s director general entering the crunch period for negotiating the level of future funding for the British pubcaster, he’s also been busy unveiling a new creative vision for the £3.5 billion a year broadcaster.
His grand plan, articulated at a flurry of industry events and conferences in the past fortnight, will see the BBC transformed from a largely TV- and radio-based business to an online, on-demand, new media entertainment resource, offering content that is portable, shareable and searchable, to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
Traditionally, the way to track the movements of the DG, as Thompson is commonly known, has been through traditional, mainstream media reports. Now, there are other options. When Thompson announced his bold new vision to BBC staff in a two-hour internal presentation, the event, which ordinarily would have remained confidential, was reported in the blog of BBC “Newsnight” reporter Paul Mason.
