Independent distributor all3media International has secured a commission for its
Studio Lambert format Gogglebox in South Africa, as part of a host of
game show and entertainment format deals signed throughout Africa ahead of the
company’s attendance at the upcoming DISCOP Africa market. DISCOP Africa runs
from 4 to 6 November at the Sandton International Convention Centre.
All3media International’s Jessica Cox, who will attend DISCOP Africa, commented,
“We are seeing rapidly increasing demand for international entertainment and game
show formats throughout Africa, and I’m looking forward to speaking to potential
new partners at DISCOP as we build on this success.’
Sony Pictures Television South Africa has commissioned a 10 x 60 minute local
version of Gogglebox, which was originally created by Studio Lambert
for Channel 4, in the UK. The new series will be produced locally in South Africa by
Eject Media and Picture Tree. Gogglebox is scheduled to debut early
2016 on the Sony Channel (DStv channel 127). This latest deal adds to a host of
international adaptations, including the US, Australia, Middle East and throughout
Europe, for Gogglebox – which presents the highlights of the week’s
television, intercut with ordinary people watching it at home.
Gogglebox has also been optioned for French-speaking Africa by
producer De Pere En Fils Prods, as part of a package of formats including Lion
Television’s global game show Cash Cab; family quiz show Cash
At Your Door, originally produced for Channel 10, Israel; and game show
Are You Normal?, which reached 330 million downloads in China in its
first series.
Further new options in the region include primetime game show format The
Cube, originally devised by Objective Productions, to Media Vision in Nigeria;
and Undercover Boss, Studio Lambert’s ratings winning factual
entertainment format, to The Televisionaires in South Africa. Finally, game show
Cash Mob has been signed by Rapid Blue in South Africa.
Sabrina Duguet, SVP of International Format Sales at all3media International,
commented, “Broadcasters and producers are looking for proven formats which are
innovative and unique, yet also simple and cost-effective to adapt to local tastes
and requirements. Gogglebox has been a standout success – charming
everyone with its unique combination of humour, controversy, current affairs and
poignant moments, and we’re delighted to see its debut confirmed in Africa.’
