Shield and Spear, a documentary by US filmmaker Petter Ringbom,
will have its Johannesburg premiere at The Bioscope Independent Cinema in
Maboneng District on Thursday, 26 February, with subsequent daily screenings until
5 March. The premiere will be directly followed by a party at Curiocity Backpackers
and will include a performance by The Brother Moves On presents Stopnoncents,
and DJ sets by Joao Orecchia of Motel Mari and Sibu Sithole of the Smarteez fashion
collective. The premiere party is free and open to the public. Shield and
Spear filmmakers and participants in the film; The Brother Moves On, BLK
JKS, Smarteez, Motel Mari, Iman Rappetti, Ferial Haffajee and Goodman Gallery, are
expected to attend.
The film will have its Cape Town premiere at That Art Fair’s “That Art Party’ on
Friday, 27 February, with subsequent screenings on 29 February and 1 March. The
premiere on the 27th will be directly followed by performances by The Brother
Moves On, Spoek Mathambo, Thor Rixon and DJ Invizable’s Champions of the
Sonaverse. Brett Murray, Fokofpolisiekar, DJ Invizable, Yolanda Fyrus, Goodman
Gallery and The Brother Moves On are expected to attend.
The film explores stories about identity, art, race, and freedom of expression in
South Africa, twenty years into democracy, and follows the events surrounding the
caricature painting of South African president Jacob Zuma which provoked a
lawsuit, death threats and a massive street protest.
