The National Theatre’s multi-award winning production of War Horse will be broadcast from its home at the New London Theatre in the West End to Cinema Nouveau’s digital screens nationwide and at Ster-Kinekor Blue Route in Tokai, Cape Town from Saturday 12 April for eight shows only.

This National Theatre Live screening of War Horse marks the first theatre production to be broadcast in South Africa in 4K, after the recent digital technology projection upgrade at all Cinema Nouveau and Ster-Kinekor sites.

In War Horse, a young boy Albert’s beloved horse, Joey, is commandeered to fight for the British in World War I. After being caught in enemy crossfire, Joey has to serve on both sides and ends up in No Man’s Land, land that is unoccupied or is under dispute between parties that leave it unoccupied due to fear or uncertainty. Not old enough to enlist, Albert embarks on a treacherous mission to find Joey and bring him home.

War Horse, described as a “remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship’, features incredible life-size puppets by the Handspring Puppet Company, bringing “breathing’, “galloping’ horses to life on stage in a thrilling production.

Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris directed, while War Horse is designed by Rae Smith with lighting by Paule Constable and movement and horse choreography by Toby Sedgwick. Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler are the puppetry directors, with video design by 59 Productions Ltd, song-making by John Tams, music by Adrian Sutton and sound by Christopher Shutt.
