The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has secured rights to broadcast the
African Nations Championship, a football tournament played between the best
national teams of Africa which began on Saturday in South Africa.
The ZBC left viewers disappointed after failing to air the opening ceremony and the
first six matches of the tournament, including Zimbabwe’s draw against Morocco.
With debts reaching upwards of $44 million and workers not receiving pay for up to
six months, the broadcaster has come under scrutiny, resulting in the dissolution of
the entire board. Managers, including the chief executive officer, were sent on
forced leave to allow for an audit.
George Charamba, permanent secretary in the information ministry said the audit
would ascertain if the broadcaster’s shortcomings were due to “governance failure,
malfeasance or simply misaligned business decisions.’
