A number of Generations stars including Sophie Ndaba (Queen Moroka), Katlego Danke (Dineo Mashaba), Menzi Ngubane (Sbusiso Dhlomo), Anga Makubalo (MJ), Thami Mngqolo (Senzo) and Xolisa Xaluva (Jason) have failed to show up on set after a two-week break.
The no-show is the result of a dispute that began after cast members refused to sign new one-year contracts which led to disagreements around contract terms and salary increases.
The filming of South Africa’s most watched soapie has come to a halt, leading to serious implications for the SABC.
While celebrating Generations’ 20 year anniversary recently, it was announced that executive producer Mfundi Vundla’s company, Morula Pictures, had signed a three-year contract with the SABC. Cast members had expectations of signing contracts of a similar nature but instead were given one-year contracts with no increase in call-out fees.
Vundla has responded to concerns saying that meeting these demands would ’abdicate my right’ to write out ’nonperforming’ cast members and that actors would be written out of the series if they are not able to reach an agreement on the matter.
Disgruntled cast members have selected Bulelani Mzamo as the attorney to represent them during negotiations.
