On 5 August 1962 Nelson Mandela was arrested by apartheid security forces on the R103, outside the town of Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

Today, 51 years later, a nation remembers this defining moment in South African history which changed the course of the country’s liberation struggle.

Nelson Mandela’s arrest was dramatically recreated in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom which is based on Mandela’s autobiography.

The attached image from the film depicts the arrest with Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela and Grant Swanby as Sergeant Vorster. This scene was shot a short distance away from the arrest site.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, directed by Justin Chadwick, also stars among others Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela, Carl Beukes as Niel Barnard, Gys de Villiers as FW de Klerk, Nomfusi Gotyana as Miriam Makeba and Terry Pheto as Evelyn.

The movie releases 28 November 2013 nationwide in South Africa and is distributed by UIP.
