Belgian film shows at The Scene Club

The Scene Club, Dubai’s regular monthly film club showcasing some of the best world independent cinema, screens Le Sac de Farine (The Bag of Flour) by Belgian Moroccan director Kadija Leclere on Tuesday 6 August at the Dubai Knowledge Village Conference Centre.

To allow for Iftar (one of the religious observances of Ramadan), the event will start one hour later than usual. Guests are invited to arrive at 20h00 to collect their pre-booked tickets and for an hour of networking where they’ll have the chance to meet the director. The screening starts at 21h00.

Based on a true story, this epic traces the life of Sarah, from her early years in Belgium through her rebellious, poverty-stricken teens in a village in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco after being abandoned by her biological father at the age of eight. Nine years later Sarah is 17 and has to find a way to earn her board with the family with whom she is staying. However, she longs to return to the Belgium of her childhood, a life she imagines as free.

The Bag of Flour is the feature debut of Kadija Leclere, a former casting director for about 100 films such as Indigenes and Mr Nobody. For this film she cast upcoming star Hafsia Herzi who plays teenager Sarah, Hiam Abbass and other luminaries.

“I had this immense privilege to see the world through Sarah’s eyes. I had the “luck’ to live part of this story, to be “kidnapped’ and “locked up’ for two years, four months, 10 days, and I am really happy to be where I am today,’ says Leclere.

The movie, which is in French and Arabic with English, was selected for numerous international film festivals, including Montpellier, Brussels, Rome, Dubai, Irvine, Goteborg and Agadir. It won Best Actress (Rania Mellouli), Best Screenplay and the Jury Prize at the 39th Brussels Independent Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the 61st International Film Festival Mannheim Heidelberg (Germany).

Guests can pre-book tickets at and collect them at the Registration Desk at Dubai Knowledge Conference Centre from 20h00 on the night of the screening.
