On 19 July the Independent Producers Organisation (IPO) released the following statement in response to the news that South African filmmaker Jahmil XT Qubeka’s new film, Of Good Report, had been banned by the Film and Publication Board at the opening of the Durban International Film Festival last Thursday.
The IPO statement reads: The IPO is appalled at what appears to be the return of censorship! Our organisation and members are deeply concerned to hear that the film Of Good Report by acclaimed filmmaker Jahmil XT Qubeka has been refused screening by the Film and Publication board at the Durban International Film Festival.
The impact of this decision has significant ramifications for filmmakers and audiences in South Africa and none of them are positive.
