This House, another production from London’s National Theatre Live series, has a short run on the big screen at Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-Kinekor theatres for four performances only.
The fast-paced and thought-provoking play releases at Cinema Nouveau cinemas at Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria, Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg, Gateway in Durban and V&A Waterfront and at Ster-Kinekor at Blue Route in Cape Town on Saturday 22 June.
Writer James Graham’s critically acclaimed new play strips British politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves and, on occasion, bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the “Mother of all Parliaments’.
It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle it out to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. Votes are won and lost by one, fist fights erupt in the bars, and ill MPs are hauled in from their sick beds to cast their votes. It’s a time when a staggering number of politicians die, and age-old traditions and allegiances are thrown aside in the struggle for power.
Directed by Jeremy Herrin, the ensemble cast, including Phil Daniels, Charles Edwards, Reece Dinsdale, Julian Wadham, produces powerful performances. Its translation from the National Theatre stage to the cinema screen is seamless and provides local audiences with the opportunity to see this production, which became one of theatre’s surprise hits in 2012.
The National Theatre Live screening of This House has four performances only in South Africa on 22, 23, 26 and 27 June. The running time of the performance is two hours and 45 minutes, with a 20-minute interval.
