The African Film Development Awards (AFDA) celebrate and recognise outstanding
individuals and organisations who have contributed towards the development of
African cinema. This year’s awards take place in Dar es Salaam on Saturday 29 June
2013.
South African movie Otelo Burning, which has received numerous awards worldwide, is
leading the list of AFDA nominations with a total of eight nods from the judging
panel. The film, directed by Sara Blecher, is about a group of youngsters from the
Lamontville township in KwaZulu-Natal who discover a love of surfing.
Set in 1989, surfing allows the characters to escape the violence of where they live.
The movie was in development for seven years and came about after an extensive
workshop process with a group of children in Lamontville.
Otelo Burning has been nominated for African Film Development Awards in the
