On 25 April Arte Creative launched The Future of Cinema, a seven-part series of video
interviews and artists’ works that will form part of the 59th International Short Film
Festival Oberhausen theme, Flatness: Cinema after the internet. The festival takes
place from 2 to 7 May in Oberhausen, Germany.
Videos include interviews with the only African participant, Jasmina Metwaly, a
member of the Egyptian Mosireen media collective.
Metwaly’s video interview is alongside Kenneth Goldsmith, author of Uncreative
Writing and founder of the online archive UbuWeb; and Geert Lovink, author of
Networks without a Cause: A Critique of Social Media and founding director of the
Amsterdam Institute of Network Culture.
Artists and activists who use the internet as a site for critical intervention and
collective organisation discuss the question: “What is the future of the cinema?’ to
reveal how they position their own work within this technological paradigm.
Artists’ works will come from British artist Adham Faramawy, German media artist
Aram Bartholl, American Robert M Ochshorn and Israeli filmmaker Lior Shamriz.
The Future of Cinema series is a collaboration between the International Short Film
Festival Oberhausen and Arte Creative, curated by Vera Tollmann and Shama Khanna.
