The live action film Dredd 3D (47 prints), which was shot at Cape Town Film Studios and stars Karl Urban in the lead role, was released in South Africa over the weekend of 28 to 30 September and debuted in fifth spot on the Combined Top 10 box office list.
Dredd 3D, which is based on the popular Judge Dredd comic books, made R561,479. It also stars South African actor Jason Cope.
Top spot at the box office over the weekend was the animated 3D release, Hotel Transylvania. It was released with 75 prints and made R2.6m.
Featuring the voices of Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Fran Drescher and Selena Gomez, the film is set in Count Dracula’s high-end holiday resort.
South African filmmaker Katinka Heyns’ Afrikaans-language, Eugene Marais biopic, Die Wonderwerker (35 prints) continues to attract audiences. As at 30 September it had made R3.9m after four weeks of release. It made the number eight spot over the weekend on the Combined Top 10 box office list.
