After two weeks of release the new South African film Lucky, directed by Avie Luthra (4 prints), has made R216,479 on the local circuit. The film tells the story of a 10-year old Zulu orphan who leaves his village to go and stay with his uncle in Durban. It is based on Luthra’s award-winning short film of the same name.
Another South African film, Leon Schuster’s madcap comedy Mad Buddies (74 prints), continues its phenomenally successful run at the box office after six weeks of release. It has made just over R23m to date and was in the fifth spot in the Combined Top 10 for the weekend of 27 to 29 July.
The biggest earner over the weekend was the latest film in the Batman franchise, The Dark Knight Rises (104 prints), which made R4.7m in its opening debut.
In the number two spot was The Amazing Spider-Man (including 3D) (106 prints) which made R2.9m. Its cumulative box office after three weeks of release is just over R15m.
Ice Age 4: Continental Drift (including 3D) (84 prints) was in third spot over the weekend and has made R25.6m to date. It was followed by Magic Mike (55) in fourth spot which as made R3.1m after two weeks of release. (Figures supplied by SAFACT)
