In a first for South Africa, the country’s regulator ICASA will on 4 July hear an application for a satellite class community television service licence. The applicant is Mzansi Community Satellite TV, trading as GauTV.
According to CentralNewsMedia, should GauTV be granted the licence, it aims to commence broadcasting early in 2013. As its name suggests, GauTV will only be available in the Gauteng province.
GauTV will broadcast solely local content and viewers will have to purchase set-top boxes in order to receive the service.
South Africa currently has two satellite television services, DStv and TopTV, both of which are commercial enterprises.
