According to The Hollywood Reporter, 3D blockbuster The Avengers earned $200.3m in its opening weekend at the US box office, breaking records. It now boasts the largest debut ever and is the first film in history to earn more than $200m in only three days. It also scored the biggest Saturday gross of all time with $69.7m.
The film broke the record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which previously held the record for a $169.2m opening weekend in 2011.
The Avengers, from Disney and Marvel Studios, has also earned $441.5m in its first week at the international box office, giving it a worldwide total of $641.8m. The film features Marvel superhero characters Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).
