The Creative Workers Union of SA (CWUSA) is not impressed by claims that British actor Idris Elba has been cast to play Nelson Mandela in a film version of his autobiography, Long Walk To Freedom, according to Channel24.
Although producers Videovision Entertainment have not confirmed the star of Luther and The Wire yet, Elba revealed the information in an interview while promoting his latest film.
CWUSA has long championed local actors to play iconic South African roles, and led the protest when US actress Jennifer Hudson was cast as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in the film Winnie. Mabutho Kid Sithole, president of the CWUSA, is reportedly not happy with claims that South African actors aren’t “tall enough’ to play the role of Mandela.
