Embattled public broadcaster SABC has appointed Jimi Matthews as Head of TV News and Mike Siluma as Head of Radio News. This was announced on 11 February by Group Executive of News & Current Affairs Phil Molefe, who stressed that the SABC was committed to reclaiming its credibility.
Matthews previously held the position of Head of TV news at the SABC before moving to Telkom Media. An experienced broadcast journalist, Matthews has worked for several local and international news networks, including Reuters and BBC.
Siluma was recently the Managing Director of Jacaranda radio station and Chairperson of the National Association of Broadcasters. He is a seasoned journalist and editor with immense local and international experience in the media.
Establishing the SABC as a credible and independent provider of news will take some doing, given its historic role as a government mouthpiece, both before South Africa’s democracy and after.
Molefe himself was in the news last May when he was appointed to his position by former GCEO Solly Mokoetle and board chairperson Dr Ben Ngubane, without the board’s approval. In September 2010, after assessing all the other applications for the position, the board endorsed Molefe’s appointment.
