South African filmmakers are invited to apply for commissions to produce five short films during the 2011 Design Indaba, which runs in Cape Town from 20 to 28 February.
This annual event showcases the latest trends in local and international design in advertising, architecture, craft, decor, film, fashion, graphic design, interior design, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design and visual media.
Design Indaba is looking for five talented and technically advanced filmmakers to produce creative inserts about the upcoming Design Indaba event in 2011. You will come face to face with cutting edge designers and world-renowned creative’s, and produce refreshing content, reaching a global audience.
You will be encouraged to appoint your own assistants to help in producing content according to your designated briefs (ranging from Design Indaba Conference, Events, Expo, and sponsor activations).
A budget of R20 000 will be allocated to each of the five teams for the production of several inserts ranging from three to six minutes in length (12 to 15 minutes worth of content in total per team).
The various Design Indaba activities will run between the 20th and 28th February; with each team filming on approximately 3 set days each.
Each filmmaker will be responsible for sourcing his/her own equipment.
Technical requirements:
All footage must be shot in either HD or HDV 1080/50i format, using a digital camera with XLR inputs. All projects will be edited using Final Cut Pro.
Selection Process:
Initial Stage
All candidates applying for a commission will need to have a sound knowledge of digital media, video compression and web-based video. Successful candidates will be chosen based on their experience, creativity and production skills.

Second Stage – short list
The top ten candidates will be required to pitch a concept proposal in the form of a one-minute film – clearly demonstrating your vision, treatment and flair.
Final Stage – Official Design Indaba 2011 film crew announced
Based on skillset, creativity and concept, five talented filmmakers will go on to be the official crew for Design Indaba 2011.
