A 3D live action film of the comic book character Judge Dredd is to be made at the Hollywood style Cape Town Film Studios, which officially opens in October this year. This is the first major 3D action film to be made in Africa.
According to Cape Town Film Studios CEO Nico Dekker, Judge Dredd will bring over $20m into South Africa and have a significant economic impact on Cape Town and the country.
Judge Dredd is produced by DNA Films (Trainspotting, The Beach, The Last King of Scotland). The film is co-produced by Michael Murphey, who produced Robert Rodriguez’ From Dusk Till Dawn 1 in South Africa and was supervising producer on District 9. Pete Travis (Vantage Point, End Game) directs.
Production is scheduled to start in March 2011.
