Some 412 matriculants aged between 16 and 20 years in the KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Western Cape provinces were targeted in the National Film and Video Foundation’s (NFVF) research project on audience development. The research, which took place in February this year, was based on Anthony Fabian’s Sandra Laing biopic, Skin, which was the first film to be distributed by the NFVF.
As per the survey, 10.6% of the respondents had not been to a cinema either because movie tickets are expensive (19.2%) or they didn’t have time to go to the movies (22.9%). Only a small fraction of the respondents did not like the movies generally.
Local productions as films such as Jerusalema, Tsotsi and White Wedding proved popular among the respondents. Most of the learners had watched more films on DVD, both local and international.
The survey revealed that the learners spend their pocket money on entertainment (41.1%) and are prepared to pay R15.00 for a movie ticket (24.1%), while another 18% are prepared to pay R20.00.
