The new film from South African-born, Germany-based Stefanie Sycholt, Themba, opened at the South African box office on 16 July and took R30,941. This put it in seventh spot on Ster-Kinekor’s Top 8 for that weekend. Themba was shot in South Africa and the local producer was DO Productions.
Talking of South African films, Leon Schuster’s Shuks Tshabala’s Survival Guide to South Africa had made R35.1m as at 18 July.
Shrek: Forever After opened on the same weekend and took R6.1m. Other big earners currently on the cinema circuit are Twilight: Eclipse, which has taken R23m to date and Toy Story 3 (incl 3D) which has made R21.5m.
