The SABC board has succeeded in overturning the controversial appointment of Phil Molefe as head of news. The appointment was made unilaterally by board chairman Ben Ngubane a month ago. The board’s decision was backed by minister of communications Siphiwe Nyanda.
It is understood that there are four candidates who have been shortlisted for the position of head of news. They will be evaluated by a committee who then makes its recommendations known to the board.
The minister met with the board last week and has requested that the board delay any decision till after the World Cup on the future of Ngubane and GCEO Solly Mokoetle who supported the appointment of Molefe in defiance of the board’s wishes. Ngubane is appointed by the president and Mokoetle was appointed by the previous interim board.
