La Scala Ballet’s Mediterranea will be screened in South Africa at all Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau theatres from Friday, 2 July. The show was recorded live at the Arcimboldi in Milan, Italy and marks the ballet’s 15th anniversary.
In this production, which features La Scala’s primo ballerina Massimo Murro along with dancers Antonino Sutera and Beatrice Carbone from the La Scala Opera House Ballet, the original creator of Mediterranea, Mauro Bigonzett,i gives the La Scala artists not only a revival but a true choreographic adaptation. He refreshes the production while maintaining its strength, colours, and the sense of a journey through the musical genres of the centuries that face each other on the mare nostrum.
Mediterranea, which forms part of the inaugural season of “Ballet On Screen’ at Cinema Nouveau, is a unique piece of ballet theatre, in that the music accompanying the production wasn’t conceptualised by only one composer, but rather presents an eclectic and quite remarkable journey through music. It incorporates a range of music, from Palestrina (a renowned Renaissance composer) and Mozart (the world-famous Classicist) to compositions by Ligeti, a 20th century Hungarian composer, popular Turkish music and even ancient Grecian melodies.
