If you had to look at all the directors in the world and choose one to do a biopic of Wallis Simpson, the middle-aged America divorcee who caused King Edward VII of England to abdicate his throne to marry her, surely the last person you would pick would be pop queen Madonna.
Yet, Variety reports that Madonna, whose only directorial effort thus far was the much panned Filth and Wisdom, is writing the script for the Wallis biopic with Alex Keshishian, who has the dubious honour of having directed the Madonna doccy, Truth or Dare.
Vera Farmiga, who stars opposite George Clooney in the Oscar-nominated Up in the Air, is reportedly considering playing Wallis. No names have been put forward for King Edward.
