As from 4 December, ballet lovers in the vicinities of Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau cinemas in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town can see seven of the world’s greatest ballet productions filmed on HD.
At a preview of The Mariinsky Ballet’s breathtakingly spectacular rendition of The Nutcracker, screened at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank Mall on 2 December, Ster-Kinekor Theatres’ Communications Publicity director Trish Downing said that ballet formed part of the palette of Ster-Kinekor’s new cinema genre of live productions, including opera and theatre.
“It is fitting that this production of The Nutcracker was filmed at the historic Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia, as that is where the first ever performance of this ballet took place back in 1892.
“All the ballets in the Cinema Nouveau Ballet on Screen series were filmed live with no cuts. The HD cinematography allows viewers to immerse themselves in ballet as never before,’ commented Downing.
Referring to Cinema Nouveau as “the jewel in Ster-Kinekor’s crown’, Downing noted that by screening live ballet, theatre and opera, the cinema chain hoped to increase audiences for these genres, both on stage and on screen.
The Nutcracker opens on 4 December, followed by Swan Lake (1 January), Don Quixote (26 March), Bolt (7 May), The Pharoah’s Duaghter (11 June), Mediterranea (2 July) and Stravinsky The Ballets Russes (16 July).
All ballets will be screend at Cinema Nouveau complexes in Bedford Square, Brooklyn, Cedar Sqaure, Rosebank Mall, Gateway, Cavendish and V A Waterfront.
