While South Africa continues to be in the grips of an electricity crisis, the California Energy Commission has decreed that all new TV sets, as from 13 months from now, will have to meet new energy-reducing standards.
This is the first US state to implement such a move and is aimed at HD TVs of up to 58 inches or more.
The Los Angeles Times reports that since flat screen TV sales exploded in the early 2000s, TV power usage has tripled.
