In future the use of the “f-word”, the “c-word” and the “mf-word” on the BBC’s TV, radio and online services will have to be referred to and approved by an output controller who will consider the editorial justification thereof. The same applies to the portrayal of violent or aggressive behaviour.
The BBC’s new editorial guidelines were launched today and follow several scandals concerning the broadcaster, most notably BBC stars Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand leaving obscene messages on Andrew Sach’s answerphone that were broadcast on the station.
Output controllers will also have to use their discretion in the post 9pm schedules.
