With the advent of new media, TiVO, DVRs, VOD and cable networks etc. there has been talk about threats to traditional broadcasting for some time. But when award-presenting celebrities quip about the demise of network broadcasting then you know it’s time to start worrying.
Viewers of the Emmy Awards on 20 September will have heard presenter Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) referring to “the last official year of network broadcast television”, while Ricky Gervais (The Office) talked about “the 5,000 people watching at home”.
The quips were prompted by the decline in network broadcast ratings, and in particular, the record low ratings for last year’s Emmy telecast.
