As from 23 September Ster-Kinekor Theatres will screen the BBC Worldwide/Green Light Media feature film, Earth, which celebrates the beauty of the planet while reminding audiences of its delicate fragility.
The film follows three animal families as they migrate across the planet. It was five years in production, filmed in 200 locations featuring 26 countries, including unseen parts of the Sahara desert in Africa. Forty specialist crews shot hundreds of hours of footage, including 250 days of aerial photography.
Director Alastair Fothergill (Deep Blue), one of the pioneers in the modern genre of nature filming, and director Mark Linfield show aerial shots and close-up views without precedent, which were taken with the newest exposure techniques specifically developed for this film. The spectator has the opportunity to observe fascinating landscapes and animals in the wild – from a perspective which people could largely not see with their own eyes.
In Earth’s global journey we meet three mothers struggling to bring up their young. In the Arctic, a polar bear family awakens to the first sunlight of spring. Half a world away, in the heat of the Kalahari, an elephant mother and her calf find water after a danger-filled trek across the desert. But they must share the pool with a pride of lions.
For the final leg of the journey, we follow a humpback whale mother. She must keep her calf safe on their 3,700 mile migration from the equator to Antarctica. And so life on earth goes on. A story played out billions of times a day, 365 days a year, as the earth moves through the seasons, every living creature bending to the power of the sun. No film before has ever captured the epic scope of the drama of an entire planet, yet told it with heart-breaking and heart-warming intimacy of real animal characters.
Earth has already been met with applause and vast critical acclaim from all over the world and is expected to be one of the most popular natural history feature films ever released.

Earth is being released by Ster-Kinekor Select in South Africa. Ster-Kinekor Select is Ster-Kinekor Theatres’ new distribution division, who is responsible for exclusively releasing movie titles at its cinemas nationwide.
