District 9 is scheduled for release via Ster Kinekor Entertainment on the 28 August 2009. The film is directed by South African Neill Blomkamp and is a sci-fi about aliens landing on earth.
The film goes back thirty years when aliens first made contact with earth. Humans waited for a hostile attack which never materialized. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.
The film was shot almost entirely in and around Johannesburg, and mostly in the Kliptown/ Chiawelo squatter camp. The screenplay was written by Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell and produced by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) and Carolynne Cunningham. The cast stars Sharlto Copley and David James.
