The former head of public broadcaster SABC’s international programme acquisition division, Matilda Gaboo, is alleged to have spent R49m on overpayments and unscreened TV programmes. This news comes a week after the SABC announced that it was R784m in the red.
According to a report in The Sunday Times on 22 March, Gaboo, who left her job in May last year after three years, is the subject of a preliminary internal audit investigating allegations of “mass corruption and gross mismanagement”.
At this stage, only 38 out of 165 of Gaboo’s deals have been analysed, so the figure could rise substantially.
