James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise, will receive the Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG) lifetime achievement award on 25 January 2009, at the Guild’s annual awards ceremony.
The Oscar-nominated, Emmy and Tony Award-winning Jones has been a veteran of stage and screen ever since 1957.
South African audiences will remember Jones in 1995’s locally produced screen version of Alan Paton’s classic novel of the same name – Cry, the Beloved Country.
“James Earl Jones’ distinguished career on stage, in film, on television, in commercials and as a vocal presence without peer commands our admiration and respect. His long and quiet devotion to advancing literacy, the arts and humanities on a national and local scale deserves our appreciation,’ said SAG president Alan Rosenberg.
