SABC Upheavals

It’s hard to keep up with the daily goings-on at troubled public broadcaster SABC, but following Group CEO Dali Mpofu’s second suspension in weeks by the SABC board on 30 May, he has been re-instated again after he won yet another appeal in the Johannesburg High Court.

The SABC board’s days may well be numbered, as after recently falling foul of the parliamentary portfolio committee on communications, seven of the SABC’s 15 top executives have called for the board to step down. They were responding to a letter circulated by SABC chairperson Khanyisile Mkonza calling on staff to ignore Mpofu’s return to work.

There is now speculation about whether controversial head of news Snuki Zikalala, who was suspended by Mpofu on 7 May, will also take the SABC to court on the grounds that the suspension was illegal.
