American director Steven Spielberg spent the weekend on which his latest film, the eagerly awaited Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, opened at the box office, totally isolated from reviews or box office predictions.
Spielberg told Hollywood Today that this is his modus operandi every time one of his films opens. All he is interested in is hearing the weekend box office figure on the Monday after opening weekend.
Well, figures for this particular opening weekend must have been music to Spielberg’s ears; Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull grossed $311m worldwide, with $115.1m of that figure coming from domestic ticket sales. It was the second biggest Memorial Day weekend (23 – 26 May) domestic opener in US history, after 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which amassed $153.m.
