A whole range of documentaries about all aspects of football in South Africa will be made every year in the run up to the country’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
“Total Soccer’, an ambitious and groundbreaking collaboration between Little Bird Television and Total South Africa, will provide an essential guide to what’s what and who’s who in South African football. Although it will appeal to soccer fans everywhere the series has a breadth of vision that takes it beyond the narrow confines of sport to embrace music, art and popular culture.
“Total Soccer’ explores the social value of football in South Africa’s new democracy in which the game is a metaphor for liberation. Racial barriers in sport were first broken down on the soccer pitch and it was footballers who instigated the changes that were to take place decades later in South Africa as a whole. Because of this special significance, football is much more than a game to South Africans – a message which is underlined in every installment of “Total Soccer’, whether it’s an episode that examines the opportunities available to young players or the crucial task of choosing a mascot for the team.
These documentaries are made by award-winning local filmmakers and over the course of the next three years will provide essential viewing for anyone who wants to follow the saga of the beautiful game in South Africa.
“Total Soccer can be seen on e.tv every Sunday at 6.30pm from 10 February to 11 May. The series then resumes from 27 July to 31 August.
