The poaching game is on again. With only a small circle of experienced broadcast presenters working in South Africa, the new pay-TV channels have to engage in luring talent across to their territory.
According in a report in Business Day (8 February), SABC’s radio anchor Jermey Maggs is to join the newly licensed e.Sat, which is e.tv’s 24-hour news service scheduled to broadcast via the DStv bouquet.
Maggs will leave AM Live, the SABC’s current affairs morning programme at the end of March. He took over as AM Live anchor a year ago when John Perlman left the programme after he exposed the SABC’s blacklisting of prominent commentators.
Maggs has been at SABC for 10 years and he brought credibility to his position as AM Live anchor in the face of accusations that the SABC was a mouthpiece for President Thabo Mbeki and the African National Congress (ANC) party.
There were no issues lurking behind his resignation but it was “time to take a few more risks and move on to other things”, said Maggs
