Always a highlight at MIP is the conference presentating Fresh TV around the world by Virginia Mouseler from French company, The WIT. Only this year it took two auditoriums to accommodate the hundreds of delegates wishing to view the freshest and most popular TV shows of the season, from around the world.
Covering creative trends in all programming genres, 23 shows were featured with18 of these, game shows. This was an interesting switch from MIPCOM 2006, where only six Game shows were shown. The USA once again took the lead with shows like “Are you smarter than a Grade Fiver?’, a show that has clearly shown, that parents are not as bright as we think.
“National Bingo Night’ gives a whole new meaning to Bingo where a contestant plays 200 audience members for the chance of taking home $50,000. Home audiences too can play. Then there’s UK Channel 4’s, Grandslam. Imagine a quiz show that takes all the winners of every quiz show you have ever seen on Television and puts them up against one-another. Yes, its Weakest link vs Millionaire vs Jeopardy and all the others.
Noteworthy is the fact that set design continues to play a massive role. Whether produced in the US, the UK, Netherlands or Germany, these sets represent the ultimate in technology, combining electronics, 3D Animation with physical skillful craft. The prize, as always, is the driver that secures the AR’s thus compensating for the huge investment in set building and design.
This presentation is based on a monthly report “The WIT Fresh TV Report’ which spots new shows launched in more than 30 markets worldwide.
