According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the global movie business outside America reached record levels last year, with a turnover of $25.8b. This is despite slow growth in America, which reached $9.49b.
However the increased box office revenues were offset by a significant increase in production and distribution costs. The MPAA estimated that the average film cost $65m to make last year as opposed to $63.6 in 2005. Interestingly enough, marketing costs dropped slightly.
